Marty Smith |
Marty Smith grew up in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, spending much of his youth exploring the Mississippi River bottoms. After graduating from St. Louis University, he spent 3 years in Germany in the US Army Security Agency as a Russian linguist and another 3 years working for the University of Southern California German Graduate Program in Munich, while earning a master’s degree in International Relations from USC. After returning to the US, he began a 20-year career in college textbook publishing. Half-way through that career he met and married Alice Cannon, an Omaha native. After several years living in Chicago and New York, they moved to Omaha just as their eldest of four children was starting school. When the travel demands of publishing became too great, he started selling technology services in Omaha, became a business coach, was ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church in 2005 and was Pastoral Coordinator for St. Margaret Mary parish. He earned a second master’s degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University in 2011 and has been a part time chaplain at Nebraska Medicine for 10 years. He became Executive Director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in 2018 and is constantly amazed by the range and depth of support the Society provides the disconnected throughout Omaha.
